May 2015

Busy times here in the Smarter Travel Office,

National Walk to School Week took place from May 16th to 20th , with School Car Free Day taking place on Wednesday the 18th. This was the second annual Car Free Day held in Limerick.

Well done to all staff, students and parents who took part in Limericks second annual School Car Free Day on May 18th.The event saw people ditch the car and use a more sustainable way of going about their daily journey. Park&Stride proved to be a very popular option this year. Park&Stride is a very suitable alternative for commuters who have too great a distance to walk/cycle, they would travel some of the journey by car, park in a safe location and walk the remainder of the way. All schools who send us their results for School Car Free Day will be entered into a draw for a €50 voucher.

For the Month of May the Limerick Metropolitan Area has been signed up to compete against over 50 other cities in the annual European Cycling Challenge. As this was an urban cyclists challenge we were looking for commuter cyclists to sign up and take part. The Challenge consisted of downloading the free app Cycling 365 to your phone and recording all cycle trips made during the month of May. The trips made by the urban cyclists are recorded and portrayed via heat-map. the heat-map will highlight areas most frequently used by cyclists, with the most utilized routes going red in colour. Weekly prizes were on offer throughout the challenge. We would like to thank everyone who took part and helped clock up the kms for Team Limerick.

January 2016

We hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and that you are all settled back into a new year. A new year, new sustainable travel goals!!!!

We kick off with Green- Schools Ireland BIG TRAVEL Challenge on its way in February.
Green Schools want you to take on the challenge of achieving a measurable increase in one of the following sustainable modes of transport; walking, cycling, scooting, carpooling, park 'n'stride or the bus. They are asking schools to promote their chosen greener mode of travel for any 10 weekday period between Monday 1st February and Monday 29th February 2016 and to record their results.
One of our smarter travel schools St Brigids is promoting cycling to school for the challenge, we know they will do fantastic. If any of our other Limerick Smarter Travel Schools are taking part, let us know what mode you picked and send us some photos. Best of luck to everyone.

An innovative programme from Our Lady Queen of Peace the 'Don't Park Here' is a unique initiative designed to raise awareness about the dangers of double parking at the schools gate. The school linked with a range of groups to create life size figures of school children, these were then placed in 'issue hotspots' to deter poor driver behaviour. This programme is now being replicated by Gaelcholaiste Luimnigh as part of a school project, so hopefully we will soon see more of these life size figures outside our smarter travel schools. October 2015

October was International Walk to School Month, incorporating the Road Safety Authority's Road Safety Week running from the 5th to the 11th October. The advent of darker evenings highlights the need to stay safe and to stay seen while out walking , jogging and cycling. Limerick Smarter Travel would encourage everyone to wear a hi-vis item of clothing and to make sure their bike is equipped with lights and a bell. Limerick Smarter Travel have a limited number of hi-vis, lights and bells in stock, please call into our office at the Granary Michael St if you require these items.

Limerick Smarter Travel Schools have been busy promoting Sustainable Travel with the majority continuing to promote their WOW action days and some schools undertaking bicycle training.

St Clements Secondary School organised two groups to  audit routes in and around their school, one group focused on carrying out a walkability audit and the other a cycling audit. The groups were further broken down into teams of 3/4 with each team undertaking a different task. Groups had to pinpoint hazards, count traffic , measure footpath width at different stages, take photographs and measure distances. The activities carried out by the groups will build towards their final year project report.

Four members of the LST team completed Sprocket Rocket Coaching Training this month. Sprocket Rocket is the name given to Cycling Ireland's foundation Cycling Skills Programme which focuses on delivery to youth aged 7 to 11 years old. Sprocket Rocket Training teaches basic skills required to ride a bike  such as balance, peddling , cornering and braking. Further information on Sprocket Rocket can be found at  http://www.cyclingireland.ie/page/programmes/sprocket-rocket

Schools were invited to apply to receive additional bike parking of up to 4 bike hoops in their schools. Schools had to go through an application process justifying their need for further bike parking and documenting site location for the new bike parking. Six schools pending a site visit have successfully applied for the additional bike parking and we will keep you up to date on the installation progress. A potential second call for applications for Bike Parking could take place in the new year, so keep an eye out for this if your application was unsuccessful this time.

(Ist class from Our Lady Queen of Peace getting their bus tickets stamped by Bus Eireann Supervisor Nigel)

Limerick once again participated in a very successful European Mobility Week, with this years theme being Multimodality "choose, change, combine"

A number of companies in Limerick took part in the National Transport Authorities very competitive Pedometer Challenge during mobility week.

Limerick Smarter Travel School project in Partnership with Bus Eireann and Green Schools kicked off European Mobility Week 2015 in Limerick with the very popular "Bus in the City" workshop. Students from 1st Class in Our Lady Queen of Peace and St.Johns Girls and Infant Boys School enjoyed a trip around Limerick City stopping for talks on safety and sustainable travel at Colbert Bus/Train Station Limerick and at Henry St Garda Station. It was a fantastic learning experience and hopefully next year it can expand to take in other key locations such as the fire station.

Road Safety Week will take place in October from Monday 5th to Sunday the 11th, with lots of road safety activities planned nationwide. We would love to hear what activities your school is planning to promote Road Safety Week.
